The park of Katerini is an area of about 50 acres with lush vegetation, lakes, housed animals, playgrounds very close to the city center and is definitely an ideal destination for relaxation for both locals and visitors.
Until the liberation, a large area of Katerini’s park was used by the Ottomans as a barrack, while the remainder was used for military exercises. At the northern entrance of the park there are two cannons reminiscent of the Turkish presence, possession and liberation. After the release, the park was dominated by municipal land and was used as a green and recreational area. Later in the park a small zoo was created on the northwest side, with various animals, such as deer, foxes, monkeys, etc. A new modern playground is now in place of the former zoo.
On the north side of the park there is the Cultural Center of Katerini (Ekavi), which has a conference hall, a municipal library, a music training room, an arts hall, and a lecture hall. On the south side of the park you can meet the small theater that hosts various performances as well as musical and dancing events, especially during the summer months. On the same side has been created in recent years, a place where one can walk his dog, let him free, train him (dog park).
In the center of the park you can find fountains, ponds, bridges and paved paths in a lush green environment. Forecourt and wooden tables are located in various parts of the park, for moments of relaxation and picnic. In recent years, an attempt has been made to re-create a small zoo in the park on the south side this time, with various animals such as deer, peacocks, ducks, parrots, rabbits, pigeons, etc.
From December until the beginning of each new year, Katerini’s park wears its festivals and transforms into a “Park of Colors”.
